The Less Lonely Road Guide to Miami: my favorite hotels, neighborhoods, and experiences for turning a cruise departure into a true vacation.
Most travelers think of Miami as the place where they board their cruise.
I think it deserves a little more time.
Miami is one of those cities that is easy to misunderstand. For some travelers, Miami means beaches, nightlife, and flashy restaurants. And yes, those things exist.
But the Miami I love is a little different: incredible food, colorful neighborhoods, world-class art, beautiful architecture, and the kind of small moments that make a trip feel memorable.
If your cruise departs from Miami, I highly recommend arriving at least one day early. Two nights is even better. Not only does it protect you from the stress of travel delays, but it gives you the chance to experience a city that is worth exploring before you ever step onboard.
Advisor Tips
βοΈ Do not fly in the morning of your cruise
Could you? Sometimes. Would I recommend it? Absolutely not. Starting your vacation with a race from the airport to the cruise terminal is not the vibe. Give yourself a buffer so your first Miami memory is a great meal, a beach walk, or a coffee stop instead of refreshing your airline app every five minutes.
π¬ Airport options
Miami International Airport (MIA) is typically the easiest option for PortMiami, but Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) can also work well depending on your flights.
π Plan your transfer ahead of time
Miami traffic can be unpredictable, so I recommend arranging transportation before you arrive, especially if you are traveling with luggage or a group.
Where to Stay Before Your Cruise
Miami has a lot of hotels, and the right choice depends on what kind of experience you want before you board.
Would you rather have a beach escape or a city stay with easy access to the port?
These are two of my favorite options:
The Miami Beach EDITION
π Mid-Beach
Best for: Travelers who want Miami to feel like part of the beach vacation.

The Miami Beach EDITION combines beachfront relaxation with the design-forward style that Miami does so well. It gives you the ocean, the architecture, and the energy of Miami Beach while still feeling polished and intentional.

InterContinental Miami
π Brickell / Downtown Miami
Best for: Travelers who want convenience, restaurants, and an easy start to their cruise.

Located on Biscayne Bay, InterContinental Miami is one of my favorite choices for cruise travelers who want a polished city stay before embarkation. You are close to PortMiami, surrounded by excellent restaurants, and well positioned for exploring some of Miami’s best neighborhoods.

My Miami Favorites
Little Havana: Go Beyond the Photo Stop
Little Havana is one of those places where it is easy to check a box and leave. Take a photo on Calle Ocho, grab a coffee, and move on. But, I recommend staying a little longer to wander and take in the details.
A perfect evening includes:
- Cuban coffee
- A stroll through the neighborhood
- Live music
- A meal focused on classic Cuban flavors
Wynwood: Art, Murals, and a Morning Stroll
Wynwood is no longer Miami’s hidden gem. It is popular, crowded, and definitely on the tourist map. But the art is still genuinely cool.
My recommendation? Go early. If you do not mind skipping the paid museums and simply want to explore the murals, this is one of the best times to experience the neighborhood before the heat and crowds arrive.
Grab a pastry and coffee at Cafe Miam while you stroll, then take your time wandering.
Miami’s Art Scene: My Favorite Side of the City
Miami has a very strong contemporary art scene, and this is one of the reasons I love spending extra time here.
- PΓ©rez Art Museum Miami (PAMM): The building itself is worth visiting, especially if you appreciate architecture.
- Rubell Museum: A fantastic choice for travelers who enjoy contemporary art and the feeling of exploring a private collection.
- Superblue Miami: For travelers who love immersive art, Superblue offers large-scale digital and light installations that feel more like stepping into an experience than walking through a gallery. (Sidenote: If this style of art appeals to you, Japan might need to move higher on your travel list. Check out my guide to contemporary art in Japan.)
What to Eat in Miami
Miami is one of my favorite food cities because the dining scene reflects the city’s mix of cultures. Prioritize trying:
- Cuban food
- Peruvian/Nikkei cuisine
- Latin American-inspired restaurants
Do not spend your entire trip eating at places designed only for tourists. Some of the most memorable meals come from neighborhoods where locals are actually eating.
